Is Africa Truly Ready for Agenda 2063?

As an aviation professional, I often view continental integration through the lens of connectivity, mobility, and the traveler experience.

Agenda 2063 presents an inspiring vision of “The Africa We Want” a prosperous, integrated, and globally influential continent. Key flagship initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), and the African Passport and Free Movement of People are designed to bring that vision to life.

But are we truly ready?

From an aviation and visa openness perspective, I would argue that Africa is ready in aspiration, partially ready in policy, but not yet fully ready in implementation.

Across the continent, we continue to face practical challenges that affect seamless movement:

Inconsistent recognition of regional identity documents such as the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.

Differences between airline boarding requirements and official immigration regulations.

Varying interpretations of free movement protocols by border officials.

Limited interoperability between border management systems and traveler verification platforms.

Operational barriers that create uncertainty for travelers, traders, investors, and businesses.

The reality is that mobility rights often exist on paper but are not always experienced at airports, border crossings, and points of entry.

Yet, I remain optimistic.

Africa has already established many of the policy frameworks needed for integration. The challenge before us is not the absence of agreements ; it is the consistent implementation of those agreements.

To move closer to the Agenda 2063 vision, we must focus on practical solutions, including:

Stronger compliance frameworks for airlines and border agencies.

Greater recognition and acceptance of regional identity credentials.

Interoperable border management systems, including wider integration of MIDAS and related platforms.

Reliable, real time mobility information for travelers and operators.

Dedicated mobility corridors to support AfCFTA trade and investment.

Effective public-private collaboration across aviation, immigration, and trade sectors.

The success of Agenda 2063 will not ultimately be measured by the number of protocols we sign, but by whether an ordinary African traveler can move across the continent with predictability, dignity, security, and ease.

Perhaps the question is not whether Africa is ready for Agenda 2063.

The real question is: Are we ready to move from policy commitments to implementation excellence?
